Ch’iu-Yu is an artwork with a combination of photography, performance, and installation. In the creative process, I was trying to visualize Ch’iu-Yu, a Chinese traditional mythological figure, by performance and photography arts. Derivative work was involved in this artwork, based on the original character setting of Ch’iu-Yu. By introducing new concepts and secondary creations, Ch’iu-Yu in this piece of artwork was made into a symbolization of a certain kind of
social mentality of contemporary China. In the following contexts, I will be talking about the subject matter and the social concern of the artwork; the combination of forms; the transitions of carriers and mediums and the study on immersive film and media.

In the recent decade, China has experienced a dramatic progress of urbanization. The shifting of industries and population transformed the environment essentially. Just like a driving wheel, the radical system reformation brings blindness. People start ignoring the importance of developing in a healthy and scientific way. In this project, my observation is based on a “ghost town” in southern China, and the unique intersection between such abandoned place and nature environment.

The shooting location of this project is in the suburb of a medium-sized city in southern China. In recent years, due to the development of the real estate industry and government policies, the city witnessed a rapid expansion. Wilderness has been absorbed into the city. However, the blind expansion does not comply with the laws of economics, which results in lots of brand new constructions lying idle. It caused an interesting and unique phenomenon where the city seems to be compressing the nature but the city itself is still a wilderness. This kind of abnormal intersection creates an ambiguity between the man-made land and nature. I was inspired by this ambiguity, and tried to document such phenomena by photography and film. The animal- like figure acted by a female dancer in my film is also an attempt to break the boundaries of city and wilderness.
